In a recent interview with The Daily Guru Vanessa Bennett from Inside80 Performance Australia generously shared some fascinating insight into why she chose to enter her field of work, the greatest challenges and achievements of her career and personal life, misconceptions about her industry and the one piece of advice she would give to her 18-year-old self.
VANESSA, SHARE WITH US SOME INSIGHTS INTO THE BEST PART OF MY JOB IS…
I help people achieve more than they thought possible with way less effort than they ever thought would be required.
I CHOSE TO ENTER THIS FIELD OF WORK BECAUSE…
I previously worked in financial services and saw so many people having difficulties maintaining high performance without getting stressed or burned out.
I also saw that many people in leadership positions found it difficult to lead the people in their teams for sustained high performance and that not enough focus was put on neuro-leadership for high performance as well as productivity and wellbeing — all in one package.
I saw a gap in the market to bring all of these aspects together for a more three-dimensional approach to high performance, depending on the needs and frameworks of the individual, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to high performance.
We help people to diagnose the best way for them to improve their performance with the help of our online pace indicator.
THE GREATEST CHALLENGE IN MY CAREER HAS BEEN…
Convincing people that they actually need to be less stressed and burned out to perform much better and that recoveries are a highly important part of a high performance plan.
The amount of people who equate “being busy” with high performance is quite astounding.
THE FUNNIEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT MY INDUSTRY/COMPANY/BRAND ARE….
That we are more like wellbeing coaches than high performance coaches — even though wellbeing is just a part of what we do.
We focus on all aspects, which we call ‘Body, Brain and Belief’. Body is obviously your physical being. We believe that you can have wellbeing without high performance but you can’t have high performance without wellbeing, which is why we spend time on this with our clients.
People think that because we include wellbeing in high performance that we must just be wellbeing coaches. I suppose this has always been something separate to high performance coaching for most people based on the feedback we are getting from clients.
We also do a lot more around neuro-leadership for high performance as well as productivity for high performance based around personal pace rather than just one approach.
THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN MY CAREER HAS BEEN…
There is no one person who has influenced my career. I believe every person I have had contact with has influenced my career as they have all taught me something that I want to do more or less of.
The people I continually choose to surround myself with are the biggest influences. They all have various qualities I aspire to be more like, which is why I’m so drawn to them.
IF I COULD GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO MY 18-YEAR-OLD SELF, IT WOULD BE….
It will all turn out OK and everything will happen in exactly the right way at exactly the right time. You may not know the real reasons things occur at the time, but they are all part of a greater journey.
Always have a plan in mind for that journey but be flexible along the way, otherwise you might just miss out on other amazing opportunities.
And remember the journey is just as important as the destination. Always be thankful for the part of the journey you are currently at.
MY GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT HAS BEEN…
Backing myself to leave the safety of the corporate world to start up Inside 80 Performance in Australia. I was 95% sure I was onto something big and 5% absolutely petrified. Luckily the 95% came true and I spent 5% worrying when I shouldn’t have.
From a standing start we are getting great results with clients and I feel very blessed to be part of the achievements of our clients.
THE GREATEST PERSONAL CHALLENGE I HAVE OVER COME IS…
When I was young I used to get teased for being skinny. I had to learn at a young age that when people are negative to others (especially around looks) it’s a reflection of their own insecurities. I did my best to develop a thick skin and remember that it wasn’t my issue, it was theirs. This has made it far easier to help others with their problems but not to take on other people’s issues as my own.
I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY…
Many people spend a fortune on things and feel guilty about spending money on their own self-care.
I TRY TO RELAX BY…
Going to the beach. It’s definitely my happy place.
MY BIGGEST FEAR IS…
Being stuck on a London tube between stations in a blackout.
I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT…
My family, friends, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Buster.
I REALLY WISH I HAD….
A better grasp of technology
THE GREATEST LESSON I HAVE LEARNT IS….
Do what you love, the rest will follow.
IF I HAD ONE SUPER POWER, IT WOULD BE….
To stop all humans saying negative things about other humans.
IF I COULD INVITE FOUR PEOPLE TO A DINNER PARTY, THEY’D BE…
Princess Diana, Dalai Lama, Sheryl Sandberg, Oprah Winfrey.
